  • 16. October 2009

Senior British judge Lord Justice (John) Thomas, who is president of the European Network of Councils for the Judiciary, vice-president of the Queen’s Bench Division and Deputy Head of Criminal Justice, is to visit Slovakia.

Sir John accepted an invitation from the chairman of Slovakia’s Supreme Court and Judicial Council, Štefan Harabin. The meeting was agreed during a recent visit to Great Britain by a delegation from Slovakia’s Judicial Council.

“We are the first among the central and east European countries to have been accepted by Great Britain at this level. Lord [Justice] Thomas considers Slovakia’s Judicial Council a significant body for the development of a democratic judicial system. It is fully accepted by judicial councils within the EU,” Štefan Harabin said after the meeting.

During their visit to Great Britain delegation members met Justice Academy Director Judge Philips. They negotiated options for cooperation in the process of educating judges and modernizing their education. The representatives of Slovakia’s Judicial Council took part in several meetings with judges of various levels, to discuss issues such as the responsibility of judges, disciplinary proceedings and the duration of proceedings.
